John Rudolph was appointed principal percussionist of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra in 1997. He was formerly principal percussionist of the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra, the CBC Vancouver Orchestra, and percussionist with the U.S. Air Force Band in Washington, D.C. John appeared as featured soloist often in Vancouver, including pops, family, masterworks and new music series concerts. Other solo appearances have included the Toronto, Edmonton, Okanagan and Peterborough Symphony Orchestras, the Pacific Symphonic Wind Ensemble, the UBC Wind Ensemble, the University of Toronto Percussion Ensemble and the U.S. Air Force Band. As a chamber musician, John has performed with Nexus, Amici, Soundstreams Canada, Masterpiece Music, Vancouver New Music and the Vancouver Chamber Music Festival. He has been invited to perform as a guest with the percussion sections of the Royal Concertgebow, Kirov, Calgary, Montreal and National Symphony Orchestras.John received his Master of Music degree in performance from Catholic University in Washington, D.C. John teaches at the Glenn Gould Professional School, the University of Toronto, and the National Youth Orchestra of Canada. He is an avid runner and has completed the Boston Marathon three times, most recently in April, 2008.
Kathleen Rudolph has been hailed variously as "a major artist" (CD Review) and as "a virtuosos flutist" (Washington Star). The principal flute of the CBC Radio Orchestra, she is much in demand as a recitalist, chamber musician and teacher. After 17 years of playing piccolo and assistant principal flute with the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra, Ms. Rudolph was appointed teacher of flute and wind coordinator of The Glenn Gould School at The Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto. She is also an adjunct professor at the University of Western Ontario.Ms. Rudolph has performed in some of the most prestigious chamber music series in the U.S. and Canada including Masterpiece Music, the Vancouver Chamber Music Festival, Music in the Morning, the Sarasota Festival, the Ottawa Chamber Music Festival and Tanglewood.
While a student Ms. Rudolph was a member of the Kennedy Center Opera House Orchestra and the orchestra at Wolf Trap Center for the Performing Arts. She was previously principal flute of the Vancouver Opera Orchestra and has been guest principal of the National Arts Centre Orchestra.
Often featured as a soloist with the CBC Radio Orchestra, Ms. Rudolph gave the North American broadcast premiere of the Strathclyde Concerto No. 6 by Sir Peter Maxwell Davies, the composer conducting; and the Canadian premiere of Paul Schoenfeld's Klezmer Rondos. The CBC recently commissioned a concerto for flute and marimba by John Wyre of Nexus to be performed by Ms. Rudolph and her husband, John Rudolph. She gives frequent concerts for flute, viola, and percussion with her husband and daughter.
She has recorded a solo cd on the CBC Musica Viva label (Silver Sounds for Flute) and is featured with the orchestra on Entre Amis, Northern Landscapes and Stravinsky and Somers.
The recipient of a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the Catholic University of America, Ms. Rudolph was an adjunct professor at the University of British Columbia and on the faculty of the Vancouver Academy of Music and the Courtenay Youth Music Centre. She has given master classes at the Shanghai Conservatory, the Montreal Conservatory, Wilfrid Laurier University and the Orford Centre for the Arts. In December of 2007, Ms. Rudolph gave concerts and master classes in three cities in Turkey. Her former students have positions in orchestras in Canada and the United States.
Violist Theresa Rudolph Koczo grew up in Vancouver where she began her musical studies on the violin at the age of 3. While in high school, she began playing the viola, studying with Gerald Stanick. Theresa spent her last year of high school in the Young Artist Program at the Cleveland Institute of Music where she was a student of Robert Vernon. She then went on to obtain her Bachelor of Music degree from CIM, graduating in 2001. Theresa spent 5 seasons as a member of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, and is now a member of the Canadian Opera Company Orchestra and Assistant Principal Viola of the National Ballet of Canada.Some of the festivals Theresa has attended include the Banff Centre for the Arts Summer Masterclasses Program, the New York String Orchestra Seminar, the Isaac Stern Chamber Music Workshop, and the Steans Institute for Young Artists at the Ravinia Festival. In addition, she performed as part of the Musicians from Ravinia 2001 Tour. Theresa has also performed at the Vancouver Chamber Music Festival, the Vancouver Recital Society, Music Around Us, and the Great Lakes Chamber Music Festival. She has been featured several times on CBC Radio, in performances that were broadcast nationally across Canada. In 2005, Theresa was chosen as a member of the Mozart Anniversary Orchestra, which recorded all the Mozart works for violin with James Ehnes on the CBC label.
Theresa performs as part of the Rudolph Family Players with her mother, Kathleen, principal flute of the CBC Radio Orchestra, and her father, John, principal percussion of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra. She makes her home in Toronto with her husband Csaba Koczo, second violinist of the Tokai String Quartet.
