YOUNG ARTISTS FOUNDERS' SCHOLARSHIP CONCERT


Now an integral part of the Fabulous Fridays concert series, the 4th Annual.Young Artists Concert promises to be an exciting and diverse presentation.  Featuring the finalists for the annual Founders' Scholarship award, the program will include young instrumentalists and vocalists from the local community.  The highlight of the evening was the announcement of this season's scholarship winner, Megan Kingsbury.

Mara Fraccaro is a 19-year-old student in the Don Wright Faculty of Music at the University of Western Ontario. She just completed her second year in an undergraduate Honours Bachelor of Music in Voice Performance. She studies with Gwenlynn Little. Mara was accepted into the UWOpera during both years and also sings with Les Choristes. She has performed regularly with the community-based Aurora Opera Company and has sung lead roles such as Hansel (Hansel and Gretel, 2006) and Pitti-Sing (The Mikado, 2005).  Mara was accepted into the Bel Canto Institute of New York’s Summer Program in Florence in 2007 and the Viva Voce summer vocal program at the Victoria Conservatory in 2006 and 2008.  She was also a member of the 2007 Ontario Youth Choir under the direction of Robert Cooper. This summer, Mara will sing the lead role of Amy in Halifax Summer Opera Workshop’s production of Mark Adamo’s opera Little Women. Over the years, Mara has competed and won prizes in the Toronto and London Kiwanis Music Festivals and has participated at the provincial level. She has performed on “Viva Domenica” on the Telelatino network. Mara is a regular guest artist with Corale Veneta at Centro Veneto in Woodbridge. Mara also plays piano, and teaches voice and piano in London at the Yamaha Music for Life school. 

 


Megan Kingsbury is a Newmarket native who is pursuing her love for the arts in Windsor, Ontario. She began singing at the age of seven and has participated in many festivals and scholarship competitions, proving to be a versatile performer, winning awards locally and provincially. Megan attended Huron Heights Secondary School where she was heavily involved in the music and drama programs. Upon graduation she received the Upper Canada Chordsmen Vocal Award. In the spring of 2008 Megan graduated with honors from a three-year intensive Music Theatre Performance program at St. Clair College performing the title role, Sweet Charity, in her final year. She has also performed such roles as, Ann (Girls in the Gang), Ishmael (Moby Dick the Musical), Mallory (City of Angles) and Yonah (Children of Eden). Megan has worked alongside musical geniuses such as Steven Woodjetts, John Karr, Steven Henrickson, and Peggy Dwyer. After pursuing musical theatre, Megan is now returning to her classical roots. She is heading into her second year of study towards a Bachelor of Music at the University of Windsor.

Eleven-year old Julia Pandolfo began her violin studies at the tender age of three and a half with Mrs. Janet Wilchfort.   Competing at the National level since she was six, Julia has since won many first place awards, trophies and scholarships in local, provincial and national competitions.  

She has been a Canadian Music Competition (dubbed the "Olympics of Canadian Classical Music") National Finalist for the last 4 years - winning 1st place in her age group for the last 3 consecutive years, and receiving National Scholarships every year for her high marks attained .   She has received the Grand Prize of Recital Classes and the Grand Prize of Sonata classes at Yip's Music Festival in 2007.  At the Arts Richmond Hill Music Festival, she has received the Junior Age Achievement award for 2006 and 2007.   At the Toronto Music Competition, she won the Grand Prize for the Strings Junior Division in 2006 and the Star Trophy for Age Achievement (10 and under) in 2008.    She is a consistent scholarship award winner at the Toronto Kiwanis Music Festival.   In 2008, she was awarded the Pidkowich Junior Violin Award - given to the Most Promising Violinist 10 or under.  

Julia plays 1st violin with the Brampton Youth Symphony Orchestra.  Over the last year, she was featured twice as the soloist in their concert series.   She continues to study with Mrs. Janet Wilchfort, Dr. Conrad Chow and with Mr. Stewart Lai, who is both her accompanist and her piano teacher.

Equally strong academically, Julia is currently in Grade 5.  In her spare time, she enjoys swimming, ballet, reading, chess, arts and crafts and soccer.

 


Hugo Lee is a grade nine student in the Arts York program at Unionville High School.  He began studying
piano at age five, and he has briefly studied violin and recorder. At the age of ten, Hugo began his oboe studies with Wendy Bornstein.  He has received several awards, including those presented by the Canadian Contemporary Music Showcase, the Ontario Registered Music Teachers’ Association and the Kiwanis Music Festival.  In 2008, Hugo performed as a soloist with the Toronto Cultural Youth Orchestra and the Toronto Sinfonietta as winner of their annual concerto competition.  In addition to being a member of Toronto Symphony Youth Orchestra and Richmond Hill Philharmonic Orchestra, he frequently performs with various community orchestras and symphonic bands by invitation.  He is currently studying with Keith Atkinson.

 

 


Melinda Kinney is 16 years old, and is completing her grade 10 RCM flute exam this June. She is a member of the Arts York music program at Unionville High School and plays in many of their bands and orchestras. She was the principal flute in the pit orchestra of their school’s production of “Les Miserables” where she received a most valuable player award. Melinda has been selected to compete in the Ontario Music Festivals’ Provincial music competition, after competing in Toronto’s Kiwanis Music Festival. She is very thankful for receiving many other awards, including a scholarship to the University of Toronto’s Power Music Camp, and becoming a semi finalist in the York Region Celebration of the Arts in 2008. Melinda currently studies with Stephen Tam, and this summer she has the opportunity to study with Trevor Wye and Julliard’s Carol Wincenc, as a result of being accepted to study at the Centre d’Arts Orford in Quebec.
